Cologne is the oldest city of German and as such is one of the most historical cities in the country, as well making it easy to tour the city on a budget given the fact that you can easily tour through the city and take in the many old remnants of architecture for free. Outside of sites such as the Cologne Cathedral there are plenty of other attractions and natural sites that you can experience for free or at a very low cost making it a great place to spend a long weekend, or even longer.
The locals are known for their jovial attitudes and it is said that if you wonder into a tavern, pub, or one of the many beer gardens you will leave with at least a handful of new friends. For this reason, evenings usually pass quick in town and with many different student quarters the price of pints and such is always reasonably low. If you manage to plan your trip to coincide with the Cologne Carnival then you can also celebrate along with the town with plenty of street stalls, sweets, and activities out on the streets every day of the week.
