Great Ocean Road – Victoria, Australia
Taking 13 years to build, the 160 mile Great Ocean Road was built between 1919 and 1932 by returning World War 1 soldiers as a memorial for the 60,000 Australians that were killed over the duration of the war.
The road runs between the historic Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool along the south-eastern coast of Australia and has some of the most beautiful coastline views that you’ll find anywhere in the world.
What makes the Great Ocean Road such a great driving route is the diverse sights you’ll see long the way on your drive. On one side you’ll see the amazing coastline with clear blue water and on the other there’s the Otways rainforest and the rock formations which are home to an array of wildlife.

Millau Viaduct – Millau, France
Unlike the other roads on this list, the Millau Viaduct was built fairly recently having only been opened in December 2004.
Spanning the River Tarn in Southern France near Millau, it was designed by British Architect Norman Foster and French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux.
The Millau Viaduct is the world’s tallest vehicular bridge with its tallest mast being 343metres high. To put that into perspective, 343metres tall is bigger than the Eiffel Tower and not far off the Empire State Building.
As you might expect from a bridge that high, the surrounding views are pretty amazing. In fact, the views are that good that when the bridge first opened they were traffic problems encountered because people kept stopping off on the hard shoulders to admire the beautiful views.
Overseas Highway – Florida Keys, USA
Following the Labor Day hurricane in 1935, the Overseas Railroad that ran through the Florida Keys was heavily damaged.
In need of repair, the Overseas Highway was built and completed in 1938 by Henry Flagler.
The 128 mile stretch of road is for the most part built over water and a total of 42 bridges combine over the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico to link the Florida Keys together.
Along this route, you’ll have amazing views of the ocean as well as mangrove vistas and fisherman out at sea.
There are also fantastic sunrises and sunsets to enjoy should you be travelling along the Overseas Highway at right time.
From one end to the other, the highway should take around 4 hours to drive but the journey usually takes much longer because of the sights you’ll no doubt want to take in along the way of this All-American Road.
Seward Highway – Alaska, USA
Running between Seward and Anchorage, the Seward Highway extends 127 miles and is another American road that has been designated as an All-American Road by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Built in 1951, it’s possible to drive the full length of the road in less than 3 hours but that would mean missing out on some of the amazing sights that can be seen along this route.
Perhaps the greatest sight you may see when driving along the Seward Highway is that of beluga whales out at sea.
Whilst not everyone will be lucky enough to see these majestic animals, you will be able to enjoy other wildlife and birdlife such as Dall Sheep and bald eagles.
There are also mountains, waterfalls, forests and glaciers to enjoy which make this such a great road to visit.
