Copenhagen is known as a central European hotbed of alternative culture and hipness even though the town itself is often thought of as cosy and slow-aced. However, walking into the centre of the city will prove that trendy cool is much more the speed in this harbour town as its streets are marked with plenty of pubs and cars tossed in between the old fortifications that offer unique ambience to the area such as the Nyhavn dock and the Amalienborg Palace. The central square Kongens Nytorv is also a whirlwind of activity and it is hard to beat the amusement that is to be had at the notable Tivoli Gardens.
The western district of Norrebro is also quite notable given the fact that it houses a large variety of ethnic groups which combine to offer a great deal of fun and activity of their own with shops and boutiques of just about every kind. To the east of the harbour canal is also the Christiania ‘free state’ where there is a hippie colony that is frequently visited by tourists given the fact that cannabis is often sold in the area despite laws to prevent it.
