The programme ‘Capital’ made by the French TV channel M6 dealing with the hotel sector in Mauritius has displeased the Ministry for Tourism.
The programme ‘Capital’, made on February 14th angered the Ministry for Tourism which did not hesitate to describe it as a superficial programme. This is because the report in question could harm the reputation of tourism in Mauritius thus provoking a quick negative criticism from the Ministry for Tourism.
In an official statement made on Tuesday, February 16th, the Ministry for Tourism indicated that “the ‘Capital’ emission diffused on M6 on February 14th, 2009 tackles the question of tourism in Mauritius in a very superficial way. This programme completely ignored the international context characterized by the crisis and the recession which had a considerable impact on tourism. Mauritius was not saved and underwent a fall in tourist arrivals in 2009 of – 6% and a decrease in income of about -13%.”
Another aspect which was highlighted by the Ministry for Tourism is that at the beginning of the report, the journalist of the French chain M6 mentions a hotel which would not be considered in line with quality standards expected of luxury hotels in Mauritius. To prove that Mauritius is a destination which reaches high quality service, the official statement explains that many hotel establishments established in recent years are rated 4-5 stars and highly esteemed in the luxury travel world. Mauritius remains a destination which proposes several categories of hotels with high standards of excellence.
